Born to a Trinidadian mother and a Jamaican father in the Bronx, saxophonist T.K. Blue took up music as a child and later built a career infused with his Afro-Caribbean roots. Blue started playing the trumpet in school at age 8 but later switched to drums. For a brief time, his interest shifted from music to sports, but when he entered high school, he rededicated himself to music and started playing the flute. Blue studied music and psychology at New York University. During his undergraduate years, he started studying the saxophone and participating in Jazzmobile events and programs. Blue later went on to receive a master’s degree in music education from Columbia University.
