The Latin Recording Academy(R) Statement About Marília Mendonça

Marília Mendonça was a promising young singer/songwriter and the voice of a new generation of Sertaneja music in Brazil.

Mendonça was first nominated for a Latin GRAMMY® in 2017 in the Best Sertaneja Music Album category and went on to win in 2019 for Em Todos Os Cantos, which featured a series of recorded concerts in all of the Brazilian capitals. She is also a nominee this year for the 22nd Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards® in the same category. 

Marília Mendonça will be greatly missed, but her legacy will live on through her music. Our hearts go out to her family during this difficult time.

Marília Mendonça era una joven y prometedora cantautora, y fue la voz de toda una nueva generación de música sertaneja en Brasil.  

Mendonça fue nominada por primera vez al Latin GRAMMY® en 2017 bajo la categoría de Mejor Álbum de Música Sertaneja y llegó a ganar en 2019 con Em Todos Os Cantos, que incluyó una serie de conciertos grabados en todas las capitales de Brasil. Además, este año, en la 22.a Entrega Anual del Latin GRAMMY®, está nominada bajo la misma categoría. 

Extrañaremos mucho a Marília Mendonça, pero su legado vivirá para siempre en su música. Nuestro más sentido pésame a su familia en este difícil momento.

The Indigenous peoples of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean are not extinct and they never were. “Todavía estamos aquí (we are still here)”: this is the powerful message of the modern Taíno movement and the foundation of “Taíno: Native Heritage and Identity in the Caribbean,” a new exhibition presented by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and the Smithsonian Latino Center. It opens Saturday, July 28, at the museum’s George Gustav Heye Center in New York.

The de Blasio Administration today announced that Girl Scout Troop 6000, the first of its kind Girl Scout troop dedicated to serving girls and women in the shelter system as they get back on their feet, has expanded to 15 shelter facilities for families with children across all five boroughs, with more than 500 girls and women now participating in the leadership-and-community-development program.
