Despite the availability of social media, video, text, and e-mail, phone is still the preferred method of communication for holiday greetings. That’s according to the Ooma.com Holiday Communication National Survey — a survey of 1,000 Americans conducted by Ooma [www.ooma.com], a leading Internet-based communications hub that replaces the traditional landline and offers advanced integrations with smart products.

Notable findings of the study include:

>> FOR NEARLY 1 IN 3 AMERICANS, THE HOLIDAYS ARE ALL ABOUT COMMUNICATION

The vast majority of Americans plan to call friends and family members over the holidays—and 26% say they plan to spend a significant amount of time communicating with their loved ones.

>> PHONE IS AMERICA’S PREFERRED METHOD OF HOLIDAY COMMUNICATION

Ooma asked Americans to list the ways they plan to communicate with their loved ones this holiday. The results show that despite new technologies, Americans across all age groups still prefer the intimacy of a tried and true phone call. The top holiday communication methods are:

#1: Phone (32% plan to call their loved ones)

#2: Text message (22%)

#3: Social media (16%)

#4: Holiday greeting card (11%)

#5: E-mail (10%)

#6: Video call (e.g. Skype or FaceTime) (9%)

>> 18-24 YEAR-OLDS ARE MORE LIKELY THAN OTHER AGE GROUPS TO USE VIDEO CHAT

While phone is the preferred method of communication overall, Americans ages 18-24 (11%) are more likely than any other age group to talk to their loved ones via video call (e.g Skype or FaceTime).
